Quick Tips

Rename A Windows Shared Printer

|

If you want to rename a shared printer on your Windows print server, you should make changes in 3 places. In the past, I've made some changes or someone I work with made the changes, but not in all 3 of these areas. The result, confusion and mix-up.

Make sure you have Administrative rights or the equivalent network security access to make such changes for the printer before starting. Assuming you properly created the shared printer and documented them in the right places, see, here are the three places you need to change to rename it:

  • Double Click on the printer in your Printers and Faxes list.
  • In the General Tab, change the Name of the printer (This Name is what shows up in your Printers and Faxes window in WinXP)
  • Change the Location
  • Under the Sharing Tab, change the Share this printer Share name
Changing the Share name will make the shared printer appear in the network browser properly.
Changing the other information makes the information consistent when someone goes into the printer properties, when they want to look for additional information such as the printer name or location.

I've seen printers renamed only in the Share name field and I have made the same mistake in the past. It got very confusing when you have several shared printers and they were moved around a bit. This is a good tip to remember if you have a business, no matter if its an SMB or a large Corporation. How do you move shared printers on a windows server?

Twitterberry Tips

|

Ever since I signed up for Twitter, I've been using TwitterBerry on my Blackberry 8703e. Twitter has replaced my RSS reader, not that I did much reading via RSS. I think the Blackberry and Twitter were made for each other, and TwitterBerry has made it that much easier to use.

There are not many shortcuts in TwitterBerry v0.8, at least not on my Blackberry 8703e. Some of you know I like shortcuts, see 24 Blackberry Shortcuts, Blackberry Shortcuts - Messages, and Blackberry shortcut keys for Blackberry shortcuts. Using shortcuts can boost productivity and can make a good application great! With that in mind, here are some tips on TwitterBerry.

Shortcuts I've only found two so far on version 0.8
  • r - Reply
  • d - Direct Message (DM)

Other Tips:
  • TwitterBerry only holds a certain number of messages, under Friends Timeline, before it cuts off older tweets. If you want to view an old tweet already on your unit, before the list gets refreshed, turn the Blackberry antenna off and peruse in the Friends Timeline. You will end up with a network connection error after a couple of minutes. I have my update interval set to Manual to make this work.
  • You cannot cut and paste a url from a tweet (if you know how please let me know!). To get around this, I usually cut and paste the entire tweet and then save the url.
  • I gather interesting twitters to read later on by copy pasting into a Blackberry Memopad Note, there are so many interesting tweets ;)
